So, this is how it breaks down. I'm really in the star wars mood. I bought battlefront, ive been rocking out on that, wanted to return to SWTOR.
I bought SWTOR on origin loooong ago. When you attempt to download the swtor launcher from origin, you still get the old version of the launcher. It asks you for your e-mail and password still, in that old system. For a while it was okay, I downloaded it a few months back, and the launcher would update properly to the new one, that asks for display name and password.
But, just today I tried to install it directly from origin, knowing that it still had the old launcher, but I thought it would update. When I sign in with my credentials, it merely says, "Cannot connect to server" I was like, hmm.. might be my garbage connection. Checked server status... friend is playing as well, so servers must be up.
I do a google search, and find the above mentioned answer, and download the launcher repair utilityp1.8.2.exe into my "apps" folder. I run it from the "downloads" section of my internet browser and it starts to run. Since it did not ask me where it wanted to be downloaded, I assumed it just temporarily installed intself inside my "apps" folder.(which it did, I checked just now after my file recovery) This repair utility starts to download something hefty, that is going to take some time. I begin browser more information on the issue. Some one on reddit said something along the lines of, "nah, origin is broken, just download it from the SWTOR site directly" lots of people said. "cool" and they did that.
So, in the midst of it's downloading, I hit cancel, or X'd it out. Either way, i stopped it. and it disappeared from my sight. I then went to my control panel-programs and saw that there was TWO versions of the launcher installed in my registry. One that said the publisher was EA, and another that said the publisher was Bioware. Either way, I uninstalled both of them. I go to the full official SWTOR site, account, game(downloads) and start to download the client/launcher that was there. It directed me to my C:/downloads/ I thought that this was funny, because my firefox always defaults to my apps folder... I attempt to redirect it to my "apps' folder, because that's where I keep my apps of course! lo and behold.. I look and my entire "apps" folder is completely gone. Not even in the trash for retrieval.. just.. GONE.
I then had to spend about 5 hours using a recovery program to attempt to retrieve all my files. Sifting through millions of files to get all my data back, I still lost about 5% file integrity of all my files, just from the bit of writing(how it overwrote my stuff for that 5% after? I have no idea, but it did something, I have not written any other files to this disk in any way)
A bit long winded, but I wanted to give you the full story of what happened.
I was really eager to jump back into SWTOR, and I was even gonna sub, and drop some money on cartel coins and get some nice looking armor, so i can run around as a bad * jedi, but now.. I am fearful that something similar may happen again.
