Low performance, FPS drops

Hello.

I have performance issues, mostly FPS drops or generally low but stable FPS, depends on which areas of the game. It's important for me to note, that I can run other games on very / high graphic settings and get more / more stable FPS. Examples: The Witcher 3, high graphic settings, 50 stable FPS. Mad Max, same. Bioshock Infinite, max settings, 60 FPS. Tomb Raider (2013) max settings, near stable 60 FPS. This is the only game performing sub-par on my machine.

I tried everything I could think of. Disabling any overclocking, overriding and messing with AMD Radeon Settings, Administrator mode, Windows 7 compatibility [and others]. Various in-game settings, V-Sync off / on, Exclusive / windowed fullscreen.

I'd also like to mention, that when I put AA on high or very high, the water, quest symbols over NPC heads, and various other graphics disappear completely.

Specs:

Mobo - Asus Z97-A

CPU - i5-4690K

Ram - 16Gb

GPU - AMD R9 280 3GB

Windows 10 64bit, fully updated.

Latest GPU drivers.

DirectX 9 installed.

Power settings set to high performance.

Attached DxDiag and screen capture with video settings.

Thank you for your reply. I realize now that this is a driver issue, and not something I could fix except roll back to previous version. Luckily, I don't have as severe problems as the guy with the 105C GPU temperature :P

I have done something that seems unrelated, but somehow solved the problem partially. In the settings.ini I changed D3DFullScreen to false, then re-entered the game and put it on windowed exclusive. This increased my average FPS by about 10~, and the random drops aren't as steep as before. Gameplay FPS still isn't as high as I'd like, but it's enough so I could play with Shadow Map Cascades on medium; that would have to do until a new GPU driver version comes out, as I have no intention to go through the ordeal of rolling back at the moment.

I really hope a new version of my GPU drivers would come out soon and fix that, as I've already dropped the game after the Shadow of Revan massive performance issues, and I try not to get attached to games that are badly optimized / perform poorly on my machine.

I think overall, what worked mostly was turning off BitRaider and doing that weird switch in the settings ini.

PS - Cutscene FPS is still horrible, haven't managed to fix that.

Hello, and thank you for your reply.

I already tried changing fullscreen / windowed, and removing shadows. Lowering the graphic settings to the minimum for every setting, even then, I had FPS drops in a war zone.

EDIT - Example of a point where 40 FPS makes no sense what so ever. There is NOTHING on the screen to cause such an FPS drop.

  • The WZ FPS is a known issue.  It's some sort of problem with the UI in that regards.

As for during a cutscene... I don't know.  Are you drivers up to date?

Yes. Every single driver on my PC is up to date. From headset drivers to BIOS.

EDIT - Here's another example. Same conversation with the same NPC, half a second difference, different POV, and 40 FPS difference. The first picture is the 20 FPS one, the 2nd is the 60 FPS.

I have played the exact conversation with shadows off, and had 60 FPS and no drops.

Now, is there anything I could do to fix that ? Or am I doomed to play this game without shadows forever ? My machine can clearly handle the shadows, as some cutscenes are solid 60 FPS and some parts are 20. I wouldn't mind if the 20 FPS was limited to cutscenes, but it affects gameplay aswell.

Also, is there any chance the issue could be the shadow cascade resolution ? I have a 16:10 monitor, and play on 1680x1050, and there isn't a shadow resolution that fits either of those exactly.

FPS will vary depending on areas but as long as gameplay is smooth I would ignore it. (as mentioned warzones are a separate problem with the UI)

Your issue with AA is the Crimson drivers and setting medium or installing the beta or reverting to a driver prior to crimson is a workaround.

see https://community.amd.com/thread/193036 may also be contributing to your fps issue

it may also be being throttled with Crimson drivers as another possibility see here
