Massive FPS drop on new laptop

Hi,

I recently bought a new laptop - ASUS ROG G551JK (i5 4200H, GeForce GTX850M, 8 GB DDR3), thinking it wiuld be a significant upgrade over my previous machine which handled SWTOR on Medium - High settings without ever dropping under 40 FPS.

Now, regardless of whether I am sitting in an empty room on Low or in a crowded Stronghold on Ultra, the FPS routinely drops to 12 - 16 FPS ☹️. This is also noticeable on planets when new "sections" of the map are loaded.

Attached is my DxDiag report.

Thank you in advance!

    Considering this is a laptop

In the Nvidia Control Panel , ensure there is a swtor profile and adjust the below

If you enable Vsynch ensure triple buffer is enabled in the Nvidia Contro Panel , conversely if not using vsynch turn off triple buffer

    Set pre-rendered frames to 1

Then In-game settings set shadows to low, if really need go to nameplates and untick scale nameplates with distance , test with this on and off to see which you should have it set too.

Let me know if this helps or not

Hey hey , laptops are fun.... think this will contain a few tips to help you out... main one; it's a laptop, additional cooling works a treat, something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2OjAeLcjPA 🙂

Always ensure your playing with the power plugged in.. and follow as many of these steps as possible

DX9.0c and the change to your power options will be massive things to do for sure..

Your Windows Power Options are currently set to "Balanced" , change this to "High Performance" and you should be gold

Edit - Also Ensure the game is using the 850M and not the Intel 4600 card

Hey Proxos! Thank you, that solved that issue...but opened up another one ☹️.

Now that my FPS is 55 - 60, I'm getting horrible screen tearing which ends up with the game freezing after a while. I have V sync turned on, but I'm still getting this issue ☹️.

    Thanks for your help!

Just thought I would mention a recent issue ,

Go into windows services and disable Nvidia Streamer Service this has been known to impact fps 3 - 5 %

obviously providing you don't use it , but it is now enabled by default , planned to be sorted in a future release.

I only had time to run the game briefly before having to run out and now it's running maintenance for 4.0. It seems to have done the trick (I got a couple of small flickers during load times, but none in the game). I will try again tonight, see if this all did the trick and report if this solved it.

Thank you so much Proxos, you are amazing!

It seems to have worked - I'm getting great performance on max without a hint of tearing 🙂.

You sire, are a legend. Thank you!
