Are you talking about the new companions or existing?

The existing companions that we all start with are supposed to be gone, as you will retrieve them back later in the story chapters. You can still retrieve them through a Companion terminal that is available now. New companions such as Lana, Senya, etc are now accessed via the new window ( N ) for Companions.
If you 'lose' your companion, you can just re-summon it from your window ( N ), or another one. I have yet to hear of ANYONE missing new companions.
its happened to me and when i do bring up the summon window the companion isn't an option to summon and i need him to progress the story i thought they would fix it with a patch but it hasn't happened and i need him to progress the story. and i even reseted the mission an nope
