@Raidell With a 512 kbps connection, I'm better off getting the files from a friend. Btw, won't my swtor version file do? Also, the repair option is greyed out for me. How do I force a repair?
The repair button will only be clickable after logging in and the launcher is not doing any downloads/installs. Can you please send me a screenshot of your launcher so I can confirm that you have the correct version?
If you have the current version files, the launcher will not do any downloads and the repair button is clickable. During repair, you probably don't have to download 11 GB but you will definitely have to download for a few hours until that the game is fully fixed. Do NOT hit the Play button until you have repaired the game, otherwise you will be missing random files and you will get problems the next time there is a patch.

@RaidellI'm fairly sure that I have the correct version. It's currently downloading Main Assets 222 as you can see in the screenshot. The Assets and Movies folders that I retrieved are sitting in the game folder. I just need to make the launcher aware of their presence. Also, how many more assets do I have left to download after this one is done?
- Anonymous10 years ago
Main Assets 222 is the current version, so you only have to download the 11 GB. But after the Main Assets, you still have to download the English Assets 226, which will be another 6-7 GB download and potentially some Movies as well. So you can expect long time to download.
The easiest solution would be to just download the game somewhere with a fast Internet, and then copy the SWTOR folder to your computer. If this is not an option, I'm afraid you have to wait for the download to complete, even if it takes a few hours or days.

@Raidell would it be realistic to expect the launcher to detect the Assets folder which I have retrieved and place back when it's time to install Main Assets 222? Also, will it detect any incomplete or corrupt files among the retrieved ones and do the needful to fix them? Thanks for your reply 🙂
- Anonymous10 years ago
It will only detect those Assets if you have the corresponding .version files. Since your launcher is in the middle of downloading and already installed Main Assets 0, you may already have some old Assets in your folder which will cause errors.
Better just let it running and not mess with it because this could only cause more problems.
Why would the presence of old assets in the assets folder be a problem? That's where they're supposed to be located isn't it?

The launcher is downloading the patches in sequence. It first downloads Main Assets 1 and then goes on to downloading Main Assets 222. Since your launcher is downloading #222, it has already downloaded and installed #1.
If you now copy your old Assets folder in, then the game still thinks it is on #1 when it's not. Then when it tries to install #222, it will crash or show an error message because it cannot upgrade from #1 to #222.
For the future, if you want to make a backup, you have to copy not only the Assets folder but also the .version files. Or better yet, copy the whole SWTOR folder to an external drive to be sure.
No matter what you do now, you will have to download a few GBs to get your installation fixed.

Let me clarify the sequence of events:
1. Downloaded and Installed Main Assets 1
2. Downloaded English Videos
3. Downloaded a couple of other small sized assets (don't recall the assets #)
4. Was in the process of downloading Main Assets 221
5. A patch came along so whatever progress was made downloading Main Assets 221 was lost
6. Started a fresh download of Main Assets 222
7. I deleted the Assets and Movies Folder
8. I retrieved the Assets and Movies Folder. Keep in mind that the download of Main Assets 222 is still going on at this point in time.
9. I place back Assets and Movies Folder. This does not affect download of Main Assets 222 (which is still going on)
Anyway, as of now the launcher says it's repairing 19 files. But like you saw, 11 GB download of Main Assets 222 was pending. So will this pending 11 GB be downloaded in the repair process itself or will I have to do something else once the repair process has completed?
Thanks for being patient with me @Raidell

Yeah, I see what's going on. Because of your slow Internet, you were still in the middle of downloading an old patch when a new patch was released. You then closed/restarted the launcher, and instead of resuming the #221 download, it started on the #222 download. This happens because the launcher is able to skip certain patches, so it tried to upgrade from #1 to #222 even though it would have been faster to finish upgrading from #1 to #221 and then do #221 to #222.
Your problem was closing the launcher, if you had left it open, it would have just finished #221, then patch from #221 to #222 which would have only been a few MBs.
So to answer your original question "And how do I avoid redownloading the entire game each time a patch is released?": Once you are on the current version, this will no longer happen. You only have to download the small patches which will be a few MBs in size. There will still be some big 3-4 GB patches but you'll never have to download the game from the beginning like you now have.
The repair function is different from the normal download. The normal download gets all files needed for the patch, the repair function checks which files are still missing or incomplete and will download those files manually.
Once you are done repairing the 19 files, it will start repairing the English Assets, the Movies and the game client. So prepare for a long waiting time; the game is very big and if you have a slow Internet, it just takes time. 🙂

Rule #1: Never ever download large game files over Wi-Fi, your asking for trouble and a rain cloud to take a dump all over your day. Play it smart and leave your Laptop plugged into the router for the day.
*Now with regards to asking if the files can be interchanged between Versions of swtor, sadly no. the Streaming Client version of the files is different to the non streaming client version, also if your changing Languages it is a completely different ball-game again.
If you Log into your Launcher (BEFORE CLICKING PLAY) and you have an "ST" in the bottom left corner, then you have the 'Streaming Client'; the only way to force/run a repair is to Close down your Launcher and then DELETE the Bit-Raider folder that is contained inside your Swtor folder, then Run the Launcher as Normal (preferably as ADMIN) and then walk away and let it do it's thing.
'Non Streaming Client' Log in (Do not click Play) then click Your Name in the top Right and select "Settings' then 'Repair'; again walk away as a watched bar takes the longest to fill.

So the 11GB pending from Main Assets 222 won't be downloaded by the repair function, but AFTER the repair has finished, correct? And how do you know that the 19 files mentioned for repair don't already include Movies?
- Anonymous10 years ago
@DBWoodynz I agree, for gaming it is best to play plugged into the router since Wi-Fi is a little slower. But I'm thinking the OP just has a slow Internet, no matter whether Wi-Fi or hardwired.
He definitely has the non-streaming launcher since he posted a screenshot of the launcher, but in case someone googles this thread and has the BitRaider launcher, your suggestions will help.

No, the repair function will now immediately patch you to #222, so once the repair is done, it no longer needs to do the 11 GB download because it already downloads those files during the repair.
(By the way, you can delete the 11 GB "assets_swtor_main_0to221" folder because it is no longer needed, but better wait until the repair is over to be on the safe side)
As far as I know, it repairs each part separately, so while repairing the Main Assets, it found 19 wrong files. It won't start repairing the other parts (like English Assets) until it is done repairing the Main Assets.
The entire Main Assets 222 size was 16 GB. I have 11 GB left so I must have downloaded around 5 GB. Will the repair function download the entire 16 GB again? Will the 5 GB I have downloaded so far be of no use?
If this is the case, wouldn't it be better for me to use the .version files I was using earlier, finish the 11 GB left, and THEN run the repair function?
- Anonymous10 years ago
Yes, unfortunately the repair ignores those 5 GB. At first I understood you wrong and thought you already had an old version of the game installed, not that you were downloading from the start; otherwise I would have recommended to just let the 11 GB download finish.
Sorry about that, we all make mistakes and I'll learn from it. For now, you have to let the repair finish because it already repaired some of the Assets. If you interrupt the repair, you will have to download the game from the start again.

Oh, I had backed up the assets_swtor_main_0to221 folder as well as my version files before placing your version files in my folder. Now I just placed back my version files and replaced yours and the download is resuming from where it had left off (i.e. 11 GB remaining). So maybe it's not an utter disaster after all? Now I will download the remaining 11 GB and then run the repair. Sounds good?
- Anonymous10 years ago
That's a relief, glad to hear you still have a backup. Yes, this will work.
It is possible that we get a patch this week. If this happens, make sure to leave the launcher open and let your download finish. Otherwise you will run into the same problem as last week.
But apart from that, you should be good now. And don't forget that after the 11 GB download of the Main Assets, it will also download roughly 6-7 GB of the English Assets, and around 100 MB for the game client but then you should have everything downloaded.

Oh, but I can't keep my laptop on 24x7 and I take it to college at times so the download can't be running all the time...

Don't worry, there is no patch planned for this week yet so unless there will be an emergency hotfix, you should be fine and have all week to download the game.
One thing I forgot, once it has downloaded the remaining 11 GB of the Main Assets, it will probably immediately be finished because it still has the "assets_swtor_en_us.version" and "retailclient_swtor.version" files, and thinks that those were already finished.
You have two choices: You can either delete those two files so that it knows that it has to download them from the start, or you hit the repair button BEFORE hitting play. In both cases, the download size will be roughly the same.

Shall do ! I will post here once Main Assets 222 have been downloaded and installed . And once again thanks for all your support.

Hey @Raidell I have downloaded and installed Main Assets 222 as well as English Assets 226. But when I click the repair option, it tells me that it has to repair and download 84 files. I checked my game folder size and it says
Size: 35.3 GB
Size on Disk: 23.7 GB
And when I enter the game folder, I see that a new folder called "assets_swtor_main_-1to0" has been created on its own.
What should I do? Also, when performing repairs, the launcher does not give me any estimate of how much longer it will take to finish, or the size it is downloading. Would switching to the streaming client (bitraider) at this point be better?
- proxos66610 years agoHero+
If you are finding the patch is corrupting and going into a repair loop continually with SSN, then yes swapping to bitraider is a good option.
re-trying with a backup of the asset folder only is worthwhile though but not using any patch folders just the asset folder.
Swicthing to BR will covert the existing good files as well so download should be reduced if you decide to go to bitraider
- 10 years ago
@proxos666 Actually, the issue is:
1. The Launcher had finished installing Main Assets 1 and was in the process of downloading Main Assets 221
2. I deleted the Assets folder
3. I used "EaseUS" program to retrieve the deleted Asset files and kept them in the Assets folder again
4. The launcher went on to finish downloading Main Assets 222 and English assets 226 and installed them as well
5. Now upon performing a repair, it is redownloading the entire Main Assets 1 (11.6 GB)
But I thought retrieving the deleted Assets folder would eliminate the need to redownload and reinstall Main Assets 1?
- proxos66610 years agoHero+
In theory it should recognise the assets , there is .version files in both the asset folder and in the main game folder , it is likely these are mismatched so it is downloading again.
@proxos666 right now I'm backing up my entire game folder. After doing so, I will switch to bitraider and see if that helps.
To switch to bitraider, I only have to change one line in the launcher.settings file, right? No folders need to be deleted?
- proxos66610 years agoHero+
Just change SSN to BR
, "PatchingMode": "{ \"swtor\": \"BR\" }"
Edit - you will need to ensure bitraider is enabled though
default is enabled , "bitraider_disable": false
