new system - launcher not working

just built a new system.  installed win11. installed latest nvidia driver. installed swtor.

the game launcher downloaded about 39GB and appeared to install the assets.  there is no local appdata ... i'm guessing because i can't actually start the game yet.

pressing the play button does not start the game.  the button does become greyed out.  however, if you move the launcher window you can then press the play button again and repeat the process forever.

i've added the game folder to the windows exceptions "C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\BioWare\Star Wars - The Old Republic"

i've reinstalled the game.

i've tried using various compatibility modes and running as administrator.

the system is: ASUS X670E mobo; AMD 7950X cpu; nvidia 3090 Ti gpu

EDIT: host.developer.log does not exist on my machine. this is because the appdata folders have not been created yet.

the missing appdata seems to be related (if not root cause) to whatever is going on

just to clarify in case someone finds this using search one day....

appdata was not missing.  there was no swtor folder under appdata.

and i didn't install directx either.

i did get the large 7.2 update that went live this week, and the game launches fine now.  i also installed a half dozen other games before taking the 7.2 update, and it's possible one of those installations gave me the necessary directx  ... hard to know for sure.

either way, my game is working

    thanks again

In Windows 10 C:\Users\username\AppData is hidden, so likely in Win11 as well. You need to allow explorer.exe to show hidden & system files to see it, or enter %LOCALAPPDATA% into the search box (i hope this works even if you didn't allow explorer to show hidden files).

    info: %LOCALAPPDATA% = C:\Users\username\AppData\Local

  • I'm having a similar problem. The game is stuck at a splash art/ load screen after pressing the play button.

I don't even know where to start to try and get the game to launch but I've done some of the easier things I've found online.  Initially I downloaded without steam and with that install I wasn't given the option to repair the launcher but I tried restarting the computer a couple of times.  I tried downloading through steam and using the launcher diag tool but skimming through the report it looks like there aren't problems listed. I tried to use the install repair tool and also to verify the game files then restarting steam and restarting computer but it still won't launch.

I'm on windows 10 with an intel CPU and an AMD 6750 XT GPU.

    Any suggestions?

Seems like a lot of folks online mention an appdata folder.
