Preferred status companion customization

The story: A while back I tried the game, enjoyed it, and subscribed for a month to upgrade to preferred. During that time I created a character of each class and played a consular to the point of receiving the first companion customization for Qyzen, and shortly after took a break from the game. I come back to find there has been some form of server merge, and all my characters now require reactivation. That's fine. I first reactivate my marauder, who is now nearing level 30, and discover I am unable to equip Vette's companion customization. Shame. So, I trash it. I got tired of looking at my consular's ugly face and decide to reactivate him in order to put together an adaptive outfit so he looks a little cooler on the character selection screen. I discover Qyzen still has his customization on, but don't want him to be the only one that has a customization, so I rip it off and trash that too. Now I'm on a kick of finishing the starting area with all my characters so I can get them to the fleet and buy them adaptive outfits for the same reason of looking cool on the selection screen. This time, I right-click Jorgan's customization after receiving it and it pops right on.

The question: Why? But more importantly, is there any way to retrieve deleted companion customizations or to obtain new copies of the starting three? Jorgan's is listed as bound so does that mean I can't just make a couple new characters, rush through their stories to get the customizations then mail them to the appropriate permanent alts?

First off, if an item is Bound (not Bound to Legacy), you cannot mail it. It is for use on that char ONLY.

Second, there are Companion Customization traders on some planets, Balmora and Belsavis, not sure about others. There are some Cartel only customizations or drops that you can usually find for sale on the GTN as well. If you are not sub, however, you need to purchase the comp customization unlock in order to use these.
