If the mail was sent by another player, ignoring the character or deleting the mail will actually just return it back to the original sender. If it was one of your own characters that sent the mail, log back on and check their mail, it should be there. If it was sent by a friend, you should be able to send them a quick mail asking them to re-send the mail.
