I got it going again by running the launcher repair utility, the link to which I found in this forum under another post.

see Launcher Closes Immediately

and [GUIDE] Launcher Troubleshooting  especially section "II. Launcher Cannot Patch Itself"

Note the download is a new set of files that go into your root game folder and replaces your old ones.
