Re: SWTOR horrendous stuttering.

@Queldron

New thermal paste maybe needed if its been years since done, check the heatsink for dust as well and the fan is working ok

temps over 71 are not good or even near 71 as dont want to be running near max temps

let me know how you get on.

Swtor is heavily CPU dependant and is a byproduct of the engine

But I think that you have to agree with me when I say that this is a great ordeal to put on a paying customer when other games (MMO's included) have almost never bothered me (and when some did was just a quick fix of a 5 minutes or less trick) in the slightest.

  • i have the exact same problem in the last few days. 4790k, 16 gb ram, 970gtx. horrendous sttutering when i'm at the fleet and sometimes on planet. this is a new problem from the last few days.

    Welcome to the club brother.

  • i've disabled (in bios) all of the cpu enhanced stop state (c3,eist,etc...) and the stuttering has gone for now.

  • Morning

    @Queldron

Owen has certainly set you in the correct direction regarding thermal paste and checking your connection.

I truly had to check 3 times when I opened up your DXdiag, as it was almost identical to my rig, except I changed the CPU from the X4 - X6 last year and have alittle more Ram.

That said, with the HD7700 (*likely you have the HD7750 just like I do) you can play Swtor on Ultra Settings; but you 'should/must' turn the Shadows OFF!

The card is a great card but for Swtor it just isn't going to want to do the Shadows in a hurry no matter what you do.
Reason for this is the card is Great for porn and everyday use.. but its nothing 'flash', and Yours is only the 1gig Version not the 2gig version like mine.

Make sure your Game is in FULLSCREEN and the resolution is correct 1920x1080.

After that reinstall DX9.0C again (Run as Admin).

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-nz/download/details.aspx?id=8109

I'm only 1 coffee into my day but check your power settings are set to FULL POWER

Also we had a AMD Video Card Driver update recently .. Did you forget to NOT INSTALL AMD's Raptor program when you updated?.. as the overlays from that cause havoc on 'our' pc's (*It's 'Our's' because we have almost identical PC's).

If your looking on where to spend your coin for upgrades.. my advice is don't as 'we' are so far behind that a new rig is Advisable at this point but if your wanting a few more years.. look at

Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor (6 CPUs), ~3.3GHz or something similar for your board
EVGA 960 FTW Edition (4 gig version only, never the 2 gig)
Make sure you have the Power supply to handle these upgrades.

    Morning sir,

I noticed your post also, again I would find a few simple changes for your settings should get you back up to the ~120 fps softcap for your hardware

Check that like Queldron you didn't install "Raptor" with those latest Vcard driver updates, then check your power settings for windows.

Resolution for Windows, then your AMD Catalyst, then Finally your Game should all be set to the same as your "Native Resolution"

*That is 3 locations and sets of settings that you have to check.

Then finally install DX9.0C again (Run the install as admin, Right click).

Ensure your playing in Fullscreen not Windowed, as Windowed does not use your DX drivers.

  • the stuttering are back and now there's also random freezes. every other game works great, swtor is the only one making these problems.

Could you please post your DXDiag aswell as your client_settings.ini (can be found in your %appdata/local/swtor/swtor folder

If you followed the steps correctly you should have seen a DRASTIC improvement.

First up The  Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 is still active in the system, I personally would disable this, otherwise ensure the game is using the Nvidia 970 card

important - select the swtor profile in the Nvidia control panel under manage 3d settings and set the following in the swtor profile

    maximum prerendered frames = 1

    multidisplay/mixed-gpuacceleration = single display performance

powermanagement mode = prefer maximium performance

    if vsynch is enabled set

    triple bufferring = on

otherwise if vsynch is off set this to off as well.

Disable the nvidia streaming service for now as well, there is one crash report listed for it, the dwm is listed as crashing a bit as well.

Maybe the reliability monitor will give more details, you can look at this by pressing the windows key and type reliability then select view reliability history

the stuttering in fleet stopped completely when i've disabled nameplate scaling by distance.

You did turn off the Xbox screen grab/recording program yes?

    "I don't have an Xbox"...

Although an acceptable answer, EVERYONE and ANYONE running windows 10 by default ends up having this turned on.

*Pretty sure the walkthrough was in my install guide.

Have you done a speedtest to San Jose in the states (if you play on a West Coast Server)?

*Just wish to clarify that the issue isn't a 'lag' issue instead of a hardware/settings stutter.

That is an old solution for some with stutter, I have attached my dxdiag to give you an idea of my system for comparison.

With the scaling enabled is there any change if you go to fullscreen (window) mode and is vsynch currently off ?

the UI is based on an older version of adobe scaleform, install this particular directx redist on win 10 (Link)

adjust pre-rendered frames back to 3 (default) can also try 4 and see if any impact, 1 is usually what eliminates stutter on swtor though.

Disabling the scaling essentially is taking load off the CPU and GPU to where it can cope ok, question is why it is an issue for your system.

  • i've tried every setting i could find ingame and in nvidia control panel. the only thing that help was disabling nameplace scaling. i have 4790k and 970 gtx so this isn't a hardware problem.

Turn  Shadow Map Resolution down in the ingame gfx settings see if that stops it.

To enable and disable vsync this can only be done in fullscreen mode

    I fixed it!!!

I had stuttering from really high CPU temperatures. I bought a new cooler/thermal paste and from 70 Celsius it went to 35-40!!! The game goes as smooth as butter now!

I want to thank the people that helped me and spent their time on me! 🙂
