The Future of SWTOR

Dear Jedi and/or Sith,

I have a question concerning the future of SWTOR and its Servers.

There is no hiding the fact that SWTOR has passed its blooming days. However, there are still some star wars fanatics (like me) who hold on to the game, given the effort and lore put into it. Recently i had asked myself whether SWTOR Servers will be kept running, considering the time I had invested into the game and the fear of losing my Progress. Now to cut things short, are there any plans to shutdown the Servers? If so is there a way to continue playing offline PvE sort of Thing? Can you rent a Server or buy one to continue playing?

Many Greetings,

The anxious Star Wars Fanatic

Note: This might not be the case for every Server, I am referring to Jarkai Sword, and many other EU Servers. I know that changing Servers might be an Option, however at the Moment i cant handle the costs incured. Maybe all characters could permanently be moved to more populated Servers, which in turn might also attract more People to the game.

  • They are doing all sorts of things to merge servers.  However, merging to one NA data center and two servers while throwing away all of the APAC players (because who can play at 350 ping) doesn't bode well for the future.  Starter zones in other games have people talking about having left SWTOR, and have since the disaster that is 5.0 launched.  My raid team has gone from 3 nights a week to 2 nights a week and now looks like one night and we're lucky to get 8 people on even then.  The last two weeks we 6 manned HM EV and KP.  Unfortunately, I think SWTOR will hang around however long EA wants to claim they have a SW MMO and no longer.  When you get to cost cutting by consolidating data centers, you're really looking at where to cut a budget to keep a system in the black.

Note, they will never admit to plans to go to maintenance or shut down until the last minute.  If you're worried about them shutting down, watch for them to stop selling 180 day subs.  That's your clue the time is near.  (I don't see EA wanting to refund subs if they shut down in the middle.)

    Thanks for the link, @proxos666

Just a note: The Hot Prospect (despite being the name of a Star Wars ship (Zayne Carrick's starship), attracted flack because of its connotations of sexuality, and has been renames Satele Shan.

    see SWTOR Community announcement here.

A great name imo - in fact, as my characters currently populate Progenitor and Red Eclipse, I've created three new toons on Habinger simply to be able to play on a server called after one of my favourite characters!
