Gear can be donated and Gear is better than Stars (shards). But Gear is NOT abused. So your point is valid, but not practical.
Shards are more valuable when it comes down to it. You can farm gear for free, as much free energy as you get. Some shards are limited to 5 tries a day and that's it. (When looking at a free farm.)
Also think about an alt that could be just building baze for free before the node is even unlocked.
I'm not saying it would be out of hand but it opens an unnecessary door, that could be abused. Gear is more accessible at most lvl's then shards are.
