He was a poor actor in Ep2 but he did a great job in Ep3, especially once he fell to the Dark Side.
I have always felt very similar, but after recently rewatching Ep 2, I think it probably had more to do with the atrocious dialogue he had to work with. Combine that with a young actor and there was no way he could convincingly sell some of those lines. Heck, Daniel Day Lewis couldn’t have sold some of that dialogue.
While Ep 3 was much better, HC did not have the gravitas to pull off the Anakin we expected to see as a Jedi Knight based on what we had built up in our minds based on what we were told in the OT. They needed someone a little older, imho, to pull off being more wise, less impulsive. Anakin always came across as very skilled and gifted with the Force, but immature, insecure, impulsive, and selfish—traits inconsistent with a “great Jedi.”
Simply put, Anakin always seemed too “gray” in the films, which made his fall/turn to the dark side less impactful. The greater the fall, the greater the tragedy.
But again, these things are production issues, not HC’s fault. He did great given what he had to work with in the role in which he was cast.
