I need 950 just for my toons at their current gear levels. If I just farmed those, it would take me at least 20 weeks to get that many. And don't even get me started on Tenacity Discs.

Not a good idea. You're the first person I've heard of buying regular gear in there. I'd stick to ship shards until you have zetas on farm. Then buy zetas with that currency.
