I need 950 just for my toons at their current gear levels. If I just farmed those, it would take me at least 20 weeks to get that many. And don't even get me started on Tenacity Discs.

Actually it will quite a lot. You'll get way higher scores and a lot more of the new gear if you have Zetad abilities. Crystals from arena are also the most important thing to get on a daily basis and help you in every aspect of the game.
Zetas are very powerful, and it takes a long time to get them. it's important to start getting them as soon as you can, so you'll have more. The gear you don't get from fleet shipments, you'll make up for in crystals if you can get your rank high.
It's not about a Zeta meta or anything, it will just hugely improve all of your characters, just like gear. The abilities are amazing
You don't need to work on the ships forever, you don't need to spend as many tokens as you will to 7* the ones you want. you can do most of it through GW at no cost of gear, and the rest through fleet. It's not that bad wasting those tokens at the end of the day even if you were to use none of the ships ever again, especially when you split it between the two shops.
I'm sure there are some ships which could be useful to you as well or ones you have pilots geared for already. Fives, fotp, both wiggs ships, slave 1 (although very slow farm).
I'd suggest getting on it now. In terms of being able to accumulate resources in the long term i think getting zeros now over spending fleet currency on gear will help you
