I get the concept. Now, a GL on defence is generally much more straight-forward than the new shiny toon with ominomidatipotato-icrons coming out of its eyeball.

Well....that's still the case, isn't it? I guess they're not as god tier as they used to be. However, one of the worst decisions (if we erase the last 4 months) CG has ever made (in my opinion) was to nerf the characters a few years ago that could counter GLs. This made the divide between non-GLs and GLs too large.
There's no GL that isn't a worthy edition to your roster. Every GL is going to add to your game.

The new toon is the hip-toon. It happened with GL Hondo when he was released. Now, he's been replaced by the new hip-toons Stranger and Spider-pig. Andor's already warming up his send off speech for Spider-pig. After him, will come another. Once the counters become common and the datacrons go away, they find their rightful place in the heirachy. GLs are always top of the rightful place mountain.

There is absolutely no GL that is 'not worth the trouble'. In fact, the original 2 have aged incredibly well....yes with a lifter. However, even without their lifters, they'd be right up there.
TLDR: GLs are top of the pile, once the new characters shiny datacron wears off.
