Says a lot about your (casual) play style.. which is fine.. and your right.. it truly doesn't effect you.
Most of the problems you described were avoidable, (you guessed it) if you had the right toons.
But, doesn't matter, you did it at your own pace, thus why 6 months.
So, farming shard is 1/4 of the equation, you need Credit + Gears + Mods. This together, is the sum of your investment to access better toons, better toons can lead to better rewards, rewards give you resources.
Where are those resources.. they're locked into ranking tiers, given when you get your ranks in Arena, Fleet, and Raids + completing special events. There are limited ranks, so everyone has to compete or collaborate. So how do I get more resources? Oh, I need those specific toons - oh and I need them now!!
What! I cannot get them now -> Okay, I choose to complain because everyone else above me has them.
Its basically what the OP is saying.
