Harsh.
A lot of more casual fans have seen movies and tv but never read expanded universe novels, or played KOTOR, TIE Fighter series or Force Unleashed. There's no obligation.
On the flip side, look at it as an incentive to raise interest in these older and still playable games, and usually readable books.
Like Fantasy Flight's X-Wing game, it looks like EA/CG has more leeway to use the expanded, not necessarily canon SW universe. Good. There's some brilliant stuff out there :)
