I think the issue is not necessarily TB causing gamers to leave. And it's not necessarily an issue.
Any online game has a life expectancy. Maybe not for the game as a whole (WoW is still going, right?), but for an individual player. And each player will be different. But there will come a time in most player's gameplay where they decide to quit playing a particular online game. For mobile games, I've seen that be about one or two years.
Before Territory Battles came along, some of the older players started to say that the game was boring or stale. I heard from many players newer than them that they did not feel the same. This is representative of game age for each individual player. Many of those older players, I think, artificially extended their game life because of the promise of something big on the horizon, something where every piece of gear and every toon mattered.
Then Territory Battles arrived. Some have left since then; some, they say, specifically because of Territory Battles. Very possibly because Territory Battles didn't live up to their expectation to extend their game life any further.
As a whole, I'd say territory battles extended the life of the game, both individually and for the game as a whole. Older gamers have more stuff to collect for. Newer gamers have another milestone to reach. As they reach guilds that can beat heroic Rancor and heroic Tank, they'll start to climb the TB stars, as well.
One very difficult hurdle, which I'm sure CG is considering carefully as they release new content, is that there may be players who didn't join expecting to have more content to play. It once was a simple collection game; I remember when guilds were first released and Rancor became a thing.
Some of those may even feel that since they once were able to do everything in the game, they think that they still should. They're addicted to being best at everything. Some of those probably quit when fleets arrived; more of those would quit when TB arrived. The game is reaching a level where you can't be great at everything (or it would take a lot of time and money to do so). I also feel like it is a situation that you don't have to. For example, I don't have to have a gear 12 Rogue One squad; 4 or 5 phases on that mission is more than enough for my guild for our star goals.
Newer players coming on after the content exists know what they're signing up for and are attracted to the game because of the content. The hope is that at least as many new players that like the new content will replace the older gamers that didn't sign up for it.
Finally, the other thing I've noticed that shortens a player's game life is amount of money spent in the game. When you've collected everything you've wanted and have 10 gear 12 teams, collecting any more doesn't seem to matter and you get bored.
My advice: If you feel like you're getting bored or overwhelmed, recognize that you can't do everything, stop spending money, and set personal goals to play for. You'll probably enjoy the game a lot more.
