Do I have to borrow a hero?

Every time I'm about to start a battle it asks me to borrow a hero. Do I have to borrow a hero? I'd really prefer to just play with my characters. I can't seem to figure out how to cancel it. Sorry if this is a noob question but I'm new to the game. Thank you

Yes, you have to. If you don't want to use them, Just get a low level toon and let them die. But it's a great way of checking out characters you don't have, or could use. You will need them at some point.
