I don't think there any huge mystery going on here. When revenue dips, they speak more, when revenue spikes, there's no need. You even alluded to that in your post, saying you spent more when they communicated more. Then the new toon comes out, people spend a ton of money, so they don't need to communicate. You also pointed out that when they do open up, they are often either incorrect and have to back peddle, or make promises that they don't deliver on and subsequently have been excoriated for it. So their incentive to communicate is not there for anything other than to rally the spenders in the fan base between big dollar releases.
