If I can farm a character as soon as it is released, why would I buy it? This would dramatically reduce the cost of characters and thus the spend on the game.

I don't think it would. People who buy characters now would still buy characters because they do not want to wait 3 or 4 months to finally get it through farming. Those of us that farm now have to wait 5 or 6 months to 7* a character, so making the character farm able at marquee is really just closing the pay gap a little.
