It doesn't cost you anything to start an attempt. you only get charged for an attempt once it is completed (all characters dead). That's why in a typical scenario you can retreat from any attempt without being charged.
In your scenario that happens on day 2. So it's a day 2 attempt.
You didn't pay for anything on the first day. I understand that it seems like you did, since ultimately that 1 remaining attempt from day 1 goes in the trash can when it expires and day 2 starts.
