I think once you get Tarkin to gear 11, you will like using his ship. I saw a big difference as I progressed up from gear 7, and I am not even to gear 11 yet. It also makes him more viable as a player, but it really helps his ship. I am sticking with using him as fleet commander.
The key with fighting Endurance for me has been to load the team with heavy hitters to kill off as many as possible before his damage immunity is used. Then I wait for it to wear off, and never use the Tarkin special while damage immunity is still up.
