The difference between ships and ground vehicles is that, people don't have their own. Yes you could make a few connections but no iconic characters have a specific ground vehicle that they would be known for.
In another post someone brought up having iconic toons take up more positions in arena and making them more powerful, these ideas could be combined but these vehicles would have to be 2-3x harder to build and gear....not sure anyone would want that.
