I believe a player can join up to 3 guilds in a 24 hour period with no additional penalty beyond the same as joining 1. I'm still with my original guild, so I don't know this from personal experience. He should be fine.
Sounds lie you did exactly what you needed to do to get away from a troll. Probably a good idea to set your new guild to "invite only".
