A level 79 CLS is an odd thing indeed. I've complained about GW more than probably anybody on this message board and run multiple accounts. I don't think it's changed at all for non-elders. I have a Level 79 account that just yesterday got matched up with a Level 85 G10 Zylo. I have nobody higher than G9.
GW on younger accounts is tricky because there's a decent likelihood of encountering a kit you might not have a counter to. Dooku under Nihilus was horrible for me before Zeb and K2 made their way into the GW shop.
Might I suggest developing a Phoenix squad? They're very useful in many parts of the game and one of the few non-zetas that will regenerate protection (a must for a successful GW, unless you run a DN lead).
GW can be problematic. Good luck and keep on fighting the good fight, and just realize when you get to Level 85 it all gets better!
