Have whoever's in 5th attack them 5-6 minutes before their payout and wait until there's 20-30 seconds left before finishing off their last ship. Or attack chain them down to the teens. Or have a rotation to lock them in attacks and timeout for the full hour before their payout. Do that a few times until they get the message and change their attitude.
