I think there are settings that you can change for airplane mode that will have it turn off all data. Airplane mode is just the "fastest" way to turn off all data.
As long as your phone can't send data (via cellular signal or WiFi), then you can't accidentally post a bad score to a raid. Whether you use the actual airplane mode or manually deactivate both of those radios is up to you.
