I actually expect to be in a worse position as I'll be at the bottom of the 80+ bracket, not at the top of the 70-79 one like your friend (and I) was.

EA doesn't group people in tournaments (unlike regular arena and ships arena) based on your starting date... so... your chances are slim to none.

They should indeed group players by a combination of starting date (hours/days actually spent playing would be even better) and money "invested" in the game.
