By the same token, arena gives tokens to get shards for characters and crystals to farm or purchase more shards/gear to power up characters. Arena is not unique. It's one piece of the game which you might happen to care about because you want to beat other people, but not everybody plays the game to be competitive. People might enjoy it for different reasons. Personally, I hate arena and would enjoy the game more if it didn't exist.
