They make money based on how we spend. There is certainly a potential motive. Is it beyond the realm of possibility that they could adjust the drop rate of a single node? Is it written anywhere that all nodes have the same rate even within a tier? It's not so even if they did it then it technically isn't even any wrong doing.

I'm quite sure, that I once read a post from a CG_xxx guy stating that drop rates for shards are fixed and don't fluctuate this way.
