They were intended to help folks gear their Farmboy Luke up for the run-up to the first Luke Hero's Journey. That's long past, so there's no more need for them.
Since then, Flash Events have been retired because they were easy to miss and the rewards weren't that hot. Instead they've been replaced with one of the Nightsister monthly events, but I'm forgetting which one. You'll see the explanation in the relevant announcement when they made that change. Basically the rewards are higher, but you only get one success a day, though you can do it at any point that day instead of having specific times where the flash event occurs.
