FWIW the earlier the shard the earlier it tends to adapt to meta changes. 2015 players have accrued a lot more resources in terms of gear/stars and are able to switch a little more freely. Particularly if you look at the top 20-50. Some 'younger' shards with a very competitive set of whales in the top 5-10 might be even faster to adapt than a whale-light 2015 shard but for the most part the latter is going to give you a better overall feel.
I'm on a Nov 15 shard and it's still zaul dominate by far..... It's all irrelevant tho, swgoh.GG has to be the standard because obviously every shard is slightly different depending on different variables.
rex has been gaining ground in the meta report on swgoh.gg, supporting the OP's claim. Maul is being used less frequently than he once was.
