There really is no guidelines.
My definitions
Krakens = buy anything and everything without worrying about costs. Buy all packs just for omegas. Max refreshes buy all gear buy all new toons and ships immediately and g12 them, Max abilities. Etc (doesn't really care about arena payouts)
Whales = spend large amounts buy all new toons and ships might gear new toons to max but still farms gear traditionally (probably still cares about arena rank)
Dolphin = spends money more modestly and wisely. Will buy a new ship or toon if they think it's good. Cares about arena. Leverages crystals for gear farming and some purchases. Crystals purchases tend to stretch over time before next purchase.
