If you're really thinking of changing the model of shard and gear drops, I recommend considering the Marvel Future Fight model. They don't give a guaranteed drop every so many times, like some people are saying some other games do, but it has something I really like. There's no guarantee of how many missions it will take to get all the possible drops you can get for the day, but it does allow you to keep doing them until you get the maximum. It was three biometrics per day, and they just increased it to five. And you can be sure that you'll get those five every day, at long as you have enough energy, so you can plan how many days it will take to get a character promoted. Something like that with gear drops and shard drops would be nice. With this game, there's no guarantee that you'll get any before you run out of attempts, and then you'd have to refresh the node to get more, no matter how much energy you have. I'd rather see a limit to how many people can get per day (say 3 or 5 per mission), and maybe the refreshes can let them have another run through to that limit another time, and then everyone can predict how many days it will take to promote the character but not how much energy it will take to get there, so there would still be a randomness to it.
