How is this a scam or an extortion?
If I go to Walmart to buy groceries, are they scamming me by putting all sorts of items I don't need on their shelves?
It's not a scam, but like everything else monetized about this game, its definitely unethical.
Its not unethical, its what the games economy will support. Its totally disgusting to you and me, but we dont HAVE to buy it, just like I dont have to buy a car for $200,000, but other people will, and thats why there are $200,000 cars.
I dont have a problem with the cost of things in the game, my problem comes from lack of content to use it in, so thats why I dont spend anymore. Dont like...then dont buy. Simple as that.
Disagree. Everything about freemium is unethical because they are purposefully inducing and preying on addiction. Freemium games are intended to provide the same rush as gambling. That said, an argument can be made that, in some sense, freemium games are worse than gambling: real money goes in but can never come out. In the world of real-money poker, players are pitted against one another. The casino’s rake is best seen as a rental fee, or a service fee for providing players a venue. The rake is predictable and fair; players can choose to go elsewhere if they feel it is too high. The freemium rake is 100% and always will be."7AnimalMother;c-2090892" wrote:

If you were going to make that argument, you would likely be wrong, just on pure scale. the number of people bankrupt by gambling, or just spending (losing) money at casinos is much larger than those who have ever spent money on a freemium game. Also freemium games do nothing to "physically entrap" you.....casinos are designed to do so. You can't just cherry pick poker, you are comparing 2 whole systems.- Horrible Packs in every way.
I was tired of only seeing packs aimed at whales, but now this is just mean playing with their big whale hearts like that. - why stop at a lolgambling/casinos comparison? let's move right to a crack addiction comparison! Obviously it's way better to sell a game for $60 or w/e new games cost, rather than literally free games, bc something something addiction.

I know you don’t understand this, cause we’ve had this discussion before, but freemium games are 100% designed around gambling psychology.
Of course there are differences between casinos and freemium games, so you can’t make a straight comparison, but to deny how freemium games are designed to work with the brain, including dopamine hits is to not understand it.
One of the more dangerous elements of games, mobile games in particular is that minors have more access to them as opposed to casinos.
You are probably a responsible adult who either doesn’t spend on the game or only spends what you can afford. That is not the case for all though and these games are designed to pray on weaknesses and human nature.
With all that being said, one can definitely play this game for free and get just as much enjoyment out of it as someone who spends 100k."7AnimalMother;c-2090899" wrote:

Sunk cost fallacy after years of "purposefully inducing and preying on addiction". Duh.
Fallacy.
Gotcha."TVF;c-2090948" wrote:

Without that fallacy, freemium games wouldn’t be a fraction as profitable as they are."littleMAC77;c-2091023" wrote:

I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem like TVF was questioning the fallacy itself, but that someone would use it as their "reason" for continuing to play a game. If you recognize that you have been **** into such a situation, why have you not left? At that point it doesn't become the fallacy, but something else (probably addiction, but also maybe just trolling the internet).
Plenty of addicts recognize they have a problem. It may take some time after that for them to actually then quit.
I’m addicted to this game in a couple of ways, luckily for me it’s not problematic and I’m enjoying it. Not everyone is the same ?♂️"ZAP;c-2091043" wrote:

Exactly my point, i do not believe the continued play of a game you believe to be predatory and no fun is because of some theory to explain why humans are not the perfect rational beings that economists want to people to be.
