Yeah, that.
To get the most r9s possible for me, I'd be starting with the things that I have at r8, but those are things I took to r8 as requirements for something else. They wouldn't make good squads. If I want squads with synergy, other than my JKL/JML squad, I'd be starting with a number of r5s and bringing them along to r6, then those r6s to r7s, etc. Just making sure every squad has r6 is still something I have to do since historically I've been more Pokemon strategy than MaxPower.
They didn't max anything out except the Reva mission. Also? Just FYI I'm FtP except for one $25 (or so? I might forget the exact number) crystal purchase almost 7 years ago which was just to support the game (because I prefer the purchase model and I feel an ethical duty to support the programmers who make the games I play). I also took a several month break at one point during which I would have earned far more crystals than I gained with that one purchase. Despite all that, the people in Maw are at most 3M gp above me, which not only takes 2 years or less to accomplish, but also I have the advantage of knowing what toons will be best for the new TB before I relic them up. Which means Ultimately I can probably be as effective in TB with 10.5 to 11M as those highest players are with 12.1. In 18 months or less I'll be dropping mad scores in TB.
What about the people just starting today?
Well, it should take them 1/2 the time to go from starting the game with 0gp to where I am now, which means less than 3.5 years.
Is that a long time? Sure.
Is it a lot shorter than it took me? Yep.
Should it be shorter still? Maybe, maybe not. Hard to tell. The right amount of time is the amount of time that allows the majority of players to have hope of reaching end-game content while still slowing people down enough that they spend and thus support the game. Where that is, I'm not sure. I just know that I'm at the point in the game where I never farm anything that's not a new release because I have everything else, and yet I still have goals to work toward, in part because of this new TB.
You have to find the fun in this game, because there are always going to be bottlenecks slowing you down, and you'll never be in MAW unless you either go back in time to open your account sooner or spend like crazy.
What's fun in the game for you? Why do you play? Focus on that.

just because one giga kraken guild whose players have spends millions of dollars on the game combined, was able to nearly max this TB day 1, it doesn't mean that for 90% of the community this is anywhere near possible for another few years
