Yeah - prep for 5*, grab 5*, and if you think you can push further absolutely go for it. These events aren't one day things.
As for Phoenix - they are an amazing early game team, and have their places late game, but they're far from the only path to success (Thrawn and Chimera aside - and LSTB special missions).
