I'm on android and have noticed once you've done a few things in game (sim, shipment purchases) there's like a 25% chance that during the next battle the game will just just grind to a halt. I've had it crash during GAC and conquest 5 times in the past week.
One thing I've learned to help avoid it is do all my Sims, then restart the app, then do the important battles.
@Khalysa just out of curiosity are you logging in with Google Play? I am and it seems to drop connection fairly often lately, maybe related?
