Doesn't count. in the original trilogy he doesn't fly nor uses weapons.
The concept for the character is the REBEL R2D2 and REBEL C3PO.
By the timeof the original trilogy his thrusters were nonfunctional, out of warranty and had no replacement parts, and during the whole trilogy he never resorted to direct attacks.
What was retconned in the prequel and animated series is a different matter, but that's (mostly) before there was a rebellion.
I believe my argument still stands, but I am not the ultimate authority in the timeline, if you are more knowledgeable in the timeline, please enlighten.
