So if you got 25,000 GET worth of Malak shards to finish him from this event, and you have 1,000 gec currency currently, you end up with a balance of -24,000 gec. You won’t be able to buy anything with gec until you work off this debt, obviously. And you will for the future need to buy things with gec, general skywalker etc. so it’s necessary to eventually work off the debt.

Not a perfect solution for sure, and it won't satisfy everyone, but IMO it's a good compromise that would probably result in fewer refunds and fewer complications. Of course, it all depends on whether it's technically possible to have a negative balance in this game.
