If you don't set a defense on the 2nd or 3rd battle does it auto populate the defensive deployment you used on the previous battle? I know they had some bugs with this function, so I wasnt sure if it...

This is incorrect.
Auto defence in round one has been disabled because it was bugged. If you don't set a defence in round 2 or 3, it will set whatever you set in the previous round.
The last two GAs I only set defence in round 1. This time I've had slightly tougher opponents so have manually set each round.
