It's most likely due to the combination of strategy, RNG, and bad AI.

A while back I used to be at around 100k power and I'm up there fighting in the top 50s with 120k power. I knew how the AI reacted to my attacks so I pretty much had an advantage every fight (only with Akbar capital ships). I've noticed I've been dropping ranks now if I'm not keeping up with the power levels.

Edit: RNG can be extremely ridiculous sometimes. I had a fight where it was down to 3 ships vs 1 and I lost because he dodged 6-7 attacks in a row ... in a row.... without dodge up, needless to say I didn't do any fleet battles the rest of the day
