Simply put, this is unethical. The price tag they associate with these things are accessible to two types of people: 1) "gamechangers" who see income off the game and thus can write a $300 toon spend off as a business expense or 2) addicts. Simply put, these are predatory business practices.
If there were reasonable prices on things (in the $10-$50 range) they'd see wider participation, but clearly they've done the math as they've eliminated things in the $10 range and charging hundreds for items / toons makes their bottom line more. Most of the consumer base is in a "no win" situation, if we don't push for the new content, they stop dropping it and the game dies, if we do push for it the bar keeps getting higher and higher.
To be clear, I'm not saying everything should be accessible to free to play. I get a lot of enjoyment out of the game and am willing to spend a bit, but when you can buy a PS4, several games and pay your utility bill for what 2 new toons cost, it's simply ridiculous.
