The problem with phoenix is that Hera's special calls an assist which is a basic, ezra's second special calls an assist (basic) and attacks upto twice (basic) and ezra's basic has a second basic attack attached to it.
The problem with phoenix is that Nihilus gives defense down when hit by a basic and if you have defense down and are hit by a basic Nihilus takes 25% of your protection. When two of your specials are merely additional basics you of course suffer.
