i'm guessing shards must be experiencing different things. i see @LastJedi says he/she has always seen variety.
i have never seen variety from day one i started playing. as soon i was able to get into arena it was the same boring meta team. i figured this would be true for all shards.
i think shards should be decided on your goals of the game. put the competitive whales in a shard and the ones who aren't competitive in another shard.
There is no never going to be a lot of variety because most people are just going to follow what those at the top are doing. The challenge, is having a meta that can allow variety. The wiggs meta, for all its hate wasn't actually centered around wiggs, it was centered around having a fast tank with a good dispeller and/or strong aoe attacks. If you understood that, you could have built a decent team without using wiggs at all.
There's a lot of characters that could have fit in and so it really left things wide open as to how you could build your team. The problem right now, is that things aren't nearly as wide open because the meta is not centered around skills as much as it is centered around strong zetas and characters with op abilities. People think it's more diverse now because you can build a decent first order, zQGJ, sith, or Rex team, but those teams that are competitive are all built around a very specific box and if you try to think outside that box you're in for a rude awakening.
