They have made zero changes to MM.

The only thing affected by the mid event changes of division is crystal income. MM only happens at the end of the event and will be the same whether the changes to divisions happen during or after the event.
My guess is their data is showing that there are more people being demoted during an event then there are being promoted and this change is likely decreasing the amount of crystals going out during daily payouts.
