I was promoted at the end of last month (just) from K4 to K3 then last week I had my score squished. I've now had one battle in K3 (which I won btw) - and I get relegated - but still get the ...

yeah, thanks. But unfortunately they didn't explain why this change was needed. As people stated, it seems unfair. A bad change
It wasn't needed but it's OK to do it anyway. It may seem unfair to some but it really isn't since it works both ways (both when you're promoted and when you're demoted) and you always receive the rewards your division and SR entitle you to.
The change is neither good nor bad. It's just slightly different.
Since people are complaining a lot about being mismatched against opponents with more GLs, maybe this change helps to sort the groups a lot quicklier, as you can drop or rise between divisions a lot faster now.
I don't see why it would, since matchmaking is exclusively based on skill rating, and nothing has changed about that
Accounts with more GLs and small Power that were initially ranked low, climb faster to the division that fits their skill. If they are still at lower divisions as they should be. Yes, people can drop a few days earlier but the change doesn't affect matchmaking one bit.
It does if certain people drop or climb more divisions in a shorter time. They will reach a group of their power faster. E.g. if they unlock a new GL and can make good use of it, they dont climb a division every third round but maybe every second round.
But...this doesn't change the speed at which you can climb or drop? Since nothing has changed re: skill rating you're still getting matched against the exact same players you would've been matched against under the previous rules where division changes only occurred at the very end of each month's GAC. You still end up in the exact same place overall, the only functional difference is that your daily crystal rewards can change in the midst of a GAC, not just at the end
Edit: I should clarify my first sentence. It does allow you to climb/drop one division higher/lower faster, but that in and of itself has no effect on matchmaking. So it wouldn't do anything about mismatches or help to sort groups quicker
