The devs clearly want to steer new players in the direction of: please buy ships with your fleet currency as it will pay off later. I have seen your profile, and I am absolutely certain you know how important ships are to get (not just to place well but to unlock the zeta challenge. Zeta challenge is the equivalent of on average 6000 fleet tokens for free each week and more). I think telling people to invest their precious fleet tokens in gear early on is just not very good advice.
You could argue that you should get your first zeta as priority (Zeta mats appear at level 81 I think), I can go with that, but the devs clearly see the shard shop for gear as something for players that have been 85 for a few months and have a wider roster to gear, rather than a quick fix for your arena team.
I see it from two perspectives for my main acc this is hardly an issue (as you may have guessed) my alt is sitting at lvl 78 here I used to spend a lot of feet tokens on gear since for the beginning the gw ships will really do. Now this source for gear is gone leaving the option to farm or buy said gear or to hamper my progress in toons progression in order to buy gear. And here the higher price kicks in as well.
